HONG KONG, Nov 11 (Reuters) - Talking points from the week in Asian football:

AL-HILAL BEAT AL-ETTIFAQ TO RETAIN TOP SPOT IN SAUDI ARABIA

Al-Hilal returned to winning ways on Friday as the Saudi Pro League leaders beat Steven Gerrard's Al-Ettifaq 3-1 in Riyadh.

Aleksandar Mitrovic put the home side ahead just before the break and Malcom doubled their lead with nine minutes remaining. A penalty from Vitinho reduced the deficit to 2-1 before Mohammed Al-Qahtani hit Al-Hilal's third.

Al-Ittihad's 2-0 win over Al-Orubah, courtesy of goals from Saleh Al-Shehri and Steven Bergwijn, kept the Jeddah-based club one point behind the leaders.

KOBE EXTEND J-LEAGUE LEAD DESPITE DRAW WITH TOKYO VERDY

Defending champions Vissel Kobe extended their lead in Japan on Sunday despite being held 1-1 by Tokyo Verdy as nearest challengers Sanfrecce Hiroshima lost 3-0 to Urawa Red Diamonds.

Tetsushi Yamakawa gave Kobe a seventh-minute lead with a deflected strike from the edge of the area but Matheus Thuler's own goal saw the teams share the points.

Hiroshima failed to take advantage, however, with goals from Yusuke Matsuo, Brian Linssen and Genki Haraguchi giving Urawa the win at Saitama Stadium.

VICTORY GO TOP IN AUSTRALIA WITH WIN OVER BRISBANE

Melbourne Victory climbed above early leaders Auckland FC to go top of the A-League standings with a 2-0 win over Brisbane Roar.

Nishan Velupillay and Jason Geria netted to give Victory their best start to a season in a decade, with cross-city rivals Melbourne City sitting second after thrashing Perth Glory 5-0.

Auckland, who are third with three wins from three games, were on a bye week ahead of the international break.

GIMCHEON DEFEAT POHANG TO GO SECOND IN SOUTH KOREA

Gimcheon Sangmu climbed above Gangwon FC into second place with a 3-0 win over Pohang Steelers as the battle for the K League's minor places behind champions Ulsan HD heats up.

Lee Dong-gyeong, Seo Min-woo and Kim Seung-sub were on target as the army team moved onto 63 points from 37 games, two points ahead of Gangwon, who slipped to third after being thumped 4-0 by Suwon FC.

Ulsan, who completed the successful defence of their title last week, were held 1-1 by FC Seoul as Jesse Lingard cancelled out Ko Seung-beom's opener for the champions. (Reporting by Michael Church, Editing by Peter Rutherford)
